Soft Story Retrofit Ordinance Background

Soft StoryOrdinance San Francisco is a multi-year community-based effort enforced by Department of Building Inspection in order to ensure the resilience and safety of the housing stock of San Francisco through the retrofit of old, multi-family, wood-framed, buildings with a soft-story condition.

This ordinance applies only to wood-frame buildings that either have three or more stories over a under floor area / basement or have any portion containing four or more residential dwelling units extending above grade where the building hasn’t been seismically strengthened yet.

Overall, the two programmes intend to ensure the safety and strength of the housing and encourage people get their house remodelled/redesigned for their own good.
